Aisha was selling pure water on the streets of Kano at age 8. Today, she's a scholarship recipient at one of Nigeria's top universities.
When we first met Aisha in 2019, she was one of thousands of children in Northern Nigeria who had never seen the inside of a classroom. At just eight years old, she spent her days selling sachets of pure water under the scorching sun to help her family survive.
"I used to watch other children in uniforms going to school," Aisha recalls. "I would wonder what it felt like to carry books and learn new things."
Everything changed when WeShare Charity's education outreach team visited Aisha's community. Through our Child Sponsorship Program, we were able to enroll her in school, provide uniforms and supplies, and support her family with a small business grant so they wouldn't need her income.
"The first day I wore a school uniform was the happiest day of my life," she says with a bright smile. "I finally felt like I belonged somewhere."
Aisha's determination was evident from the start. Despite joining school later than her peers, she worked tirelessly to catch up. By the end of her first year, she was among the top students in her class. This pattern continued throughout her primary and secondary education.
In 2025, Aisha sat for her WAEC examinations and achieved distinctions in all subjects. Her results earned her a full scholarship to study Medicine at Ahmadu Bello University.
"I want to become a doctor and return to help my community," Aisha shares. "There are so many children like me who just need one opportunity. WeShare gave me that opportunity, and I will spend my life paying it forward."
Aisha's story is a powerful reminder of the transformative power of education and why every donation to WeShare Charity matters.
